Raheem Sterling calls for stadium ban following latest racist abuse incident

Raheem Sterling has called for a stadium ban against Montenegro after members of the England squad were subject to racist abuse during their Euro 2020 qualifier on Monday night.

England secured a fine 5-1 win at the Gradski Stadion in a match which was overshadowed by racist abuse from some sections of the home support.

Racist chanting was aimed at members of the England team, with a specific incident of monkey chanting clearly aimed at Danny Rose when he was booked in injury time of the match.

Manchester City forward Sterling called for tough action to be taken by football's governing bodies and he believes a stadium ban is the next step in cracking down on such incidents.

"A couple of idiots ruined a great night and it is a real sad thing to hear," Sterling told BBC Radio 5 Live. "It's a real sad situation we are talking about after a great win.

England manager Gareth Southgate confirms racist abuse aimed at Danny Rose after Raheem Sterling celebration

"I don't think it was just one or two people that heard it, it was the whole bench. There should be a real punishment for this, not just the two or three people who were doing it - it needs to be a collective thing.

"This place holds 15,000. The punishment should be, whatever nation it is, if your fans are chanting racist abuse then it should be the whole stadium so no-one can come and watch.

"When the ban is lifted, the fans will think twice. They all love football, they all want to come and watch their nation so it will make them think twice before doing something silly like that."
