Raheem Sterling broke a 20 year-old England record with Czech Republic hat-trick

Raheem Sterling's sensational hat-trick against the Czech Republic on Friday night saw him match an England record that has stood for 20 years.

The Manchester City forward became the first England player to score hat-tricks for both club and country in the same month since Alan Shearer achieved the feat way back in 1999.

The former Three Lions skipper netted three times against Luxembourg in a 6-0 Euro 2000 qualifying win at Wembley in the same month as putting a Premier League-record five goals past Sheffield Wednesday in an unprecedented 8-0 win at St. James's Park.

Sterling scored three times for champions City against Watford earlier this month before putting the Czechs to the sword in the opening game of qualifying for the 2020 European Championships.

Responding the record on Twitter after Opta brought it to his attention, Sterling said: "Not bad company, thx [sic] guys."

The three-goal haul marked a sensational continuation of the City player's wonderful form for his club this season, but perhaps more significantly it firmly announced his ascendancy in an England shirt after a summer in which he was criticised for his performances during the World Cup.

Sterling has now scored five goals in his last three appearances for England having failed to net in his previous 27, and is on track to stake a claim to the PFA Player of the Year award come the end of the season.

The result puts England comfortably top of their nascent qualifying group in their bid to reach Euro 2020.

Eric Dier ruled out of England's Euro 2020 qualifier vs Montenegro

Elsewhere in the group, Bulgaria came from behind late on to rescue a 1-1 draw in Sofia against Montenegro, who England face in their next game on Monday.

Gareth Southgate will be without Eric Dier in Podgorica after the Spurs midfielder was forced off injured against the Czechs.
