Raheem Morris following loss to Chargers: ‘Stats are for losers’

The Atlanta Falcons fell to 4-9 on the season and 4-4 under the leadership of Raheem Morris. A frustrated Morris spoke to the media following the Falcons’ 20-17 loss to the Chargers.

“Calvin wants to get winning seasons. We always talk about winning seasons”, Morris said. “It’s not just about winning this game, he wants to be a part of winning seasons.”

Ridley comes from the University of Alabama where he lost only three games over his entire career and went 2-1 in National Championship games. In his three seasons in the NFL, he has yet to achieve a winning season.

“Stats are for losers”, said Morris. “Obviously that was a perfect game for him and a personal thing he wanted to do throughout the season, and I’m happy for him.”

Ridley’s 1,000-yard mark wasn’t the only notable stat from Sunday’s game. Matt Ryan also broke another NFL record.

Morris isn’t calling either player a loser, they’re both exceptional athletes and have the capabilities to compete at the highest levels of the league. However, he’s just emphasizing both players’ desire to win over personal accolades.

Despite the fans wavering confidence in Matt Ryan, it doesn’t seem his head coach has lost any confidence in his quarterback. However, once the season is over, that’s a question for the next Falcons head coach.

Check out what Ryan had to say about his own future.

Morris was asked specifically about Matt Ryan’s interception thrown into double coverage, and Morris credited Matt’s accountability to own up to his mistakes.

“Matt’s a high-character guy”, Morris said. “He’ll be the first one to tell you when something is wrong or something is his fault. I’m sure that he will be as absolutely honest as he can possibly be about those things.”

With the Falcons having nothing left to play for, it will be interesting to see the team’s approach over the final three games. Morris has to be aware his time in Atlanta is ending and these next three games could be the determining factor in getting a head-coaching job elsewhere, something he wants to get back into.
