Stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane led from the front, posting a composed century as India built a strong first-innings lead over Australia in the second Test at the MCG.
Rahane brought up his hundred in fine style, guiding a Pat Cummins delivery through backward point for four, midway through the final session on day two.
At that point, the stylish right-hander had hit 11 boundaries in his 195-ball innings as India reached 5-268 for a lead of 73.
But Rahane's classy knock wasn't without chances as Mitchell Starc was twice left to ponder what might've been.
Rahane was on 57 when he nicked Starc through a vacant first slip and was later dropped by Steve Smith at second slip on 73, after Australia had taken the new ball.
The hosts were made to pay for their mistakes as Rahane posted his second MCG ton and the first triple-figure score by any batsman in this Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
The innings came a day after Rahane was widely praised for his captaincy as India bowled out Australia for 195.
