Raglan Arms pub up for grabs for £10 as owners look to sell with a competition

A popular Welsh pub could be yours for just £10 after the owners decided to sell up in a unique fashion.

The retiring couple who own the Raglan Arms pub and restaurant in Llandenny near Usk have set up a competition to offload the boozer for less than the cost of a round with a few mates.

Due to the pandemic making it unlikely they’d be able to sell the premises for any significant value, the owners, husband and wife William and Judith Brown, have come up with a quirky way to sell it - a competition involving a jar of beans.

People hoping to purchase the pub can enter the competition for £10, where all you have to do is guess how many beans are in a jar.

Explaining the move, Judith said: “We were well aware that the timing wasn’t correct to put a business up for sale, but as the pandemic has gone on, we’re getting older, and we’ve decided we’re now unable to continue running the premises.

“We thought that due to the circumstances, this would be the best approach.

“We need to sell 95,000 tickets. If we don’t manage to sell those tickets we would have to retain the pub, and the money would then go back into a competition draw.”

The winner will be the new owner of a restaurant seating 32, a conservatory dining area seating 18, a lounge bar seating 14, and four bedrooms.

It also has an outdoor deck area seating 37, and a large car park.

The couple said they are sad to leave the pub after a “very enjoyable time”.

“We all know of the difficulties over the last 15 months or so,” Judith added, “but we really have had a lovely time.

“I miss the atmosphere - the excitement and chatter that I used to hear so often. It’s a really brilliant place.”
