Raging Tesco shopper 'assaults staff' and screams 'I earn more than you' in booze row

An irate shopper attacked a supermarket worker and screamed through the locked doors "I earn more than you" after he was refused entry.

Staff at the Tesco Express store in Birkdale, Southport, in Merseyside, locked the doors and called police after the customer turned violent.

He had apparently been told he would not be sold any alcohol before reportedly striking a member of staff and then shouting abuse through the glass when he was ushered outside.

Witnesses told the Liverpool Echo he soon turned on people queuing up around the car park.

With his face pressed up at the glass, he apparently said: "Hey f***head, I earn more than you do, you f***head."

"He then mumbles to himself before kicking the door and saying 'where I come from. In Sicily and f***ing Scotland, you wouldn't get away with that', a witness said.

The man came back and kicked the door again while continuing to call the staff member "a piece of s***" and saying he doesn't "give a f***ing s**t about the police", they continued.

As he carried on punching the door, the man then told the staff member that he should "come out now and face the consequences" before kicking the door multiple times and telling them "I'm Sicilian, I'm Glaswegian, you don't f*** with me".

The man argued with customers waiting outside the Liverpool Road store, telling one man to "go home".

After police arrived at the scene around 11am yesterday, officers arrested a 44-year-old, from Southport, on suspicion of assault and placed him in handcuffs.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We were called to the Tesco store on Liverpool Road in Birkdale at just after 10.50am today (Tuesday) following reports a male member of staff had been assaulted.

"We arrested a 44 year-old man from the Southport area on suspicion of 39 assault.

"He is currently in custody where he will be questioned by officers."
