Raging inferno at Scots beauty spot as fire crews tackle massive gorse blaze

A fire crew was forced to tackle a raging inferno at a Scots beauty spot after a large area of gorse went up in flames.

A shocking image from the scene in Lochore Meadows Country Park, near Lochgelly, in Fife, showed the fierce flames leaping into the sky on Thursday night.

The alarm was raised by shocked walkers who spotted the blaze shortly after 7pm with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service called to the scene.

They managed to extinguish the fire before a second broke out a short time later.

The latest blaze follows a spate of wilful fire raising incidents in the surrounding area.

Police officers were forced to step up patrols after more than 10 separate fires were started in the park and on the nearby Benarty Hill on April 7.

A wildlife warning is currently in place across large parts of Scotland with members of the public told to avoid using open flames in the countryside.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 7.13pm on Thursday, April 22 to reports of a small fire in open ground at Lochore Meadows Country Park, near Lochgelly, Fife.

"Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance and firefighters extinguished the flames.

"There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe."
