Rafael van der Vaart makes bold Champions League prediction - and Spurs fans will love it

Tottenham return to Champions League action this evening with the Lilywhites taking on Man City in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Having managed to get through a group containing Barcelona and Inter Milan by the skin of their teeth, Spurs then sealed their place in the final eight after beating Borussia Dortmund 4-0 on aggregate.

Given many fans wanted to be drawn against either Ajax or Porto in the quarter-finals, Mauricio Pochettino's side were paired against Champions League favourites Man City when the draw was made last month.

Spurs have lost their last three league meetings against Pep Guardiola's team and City go into the game as the favourites.

However, former player Rafael van der Vaart believes that Spurs can cause a shock and advance to the last four to play either Ajax or Juventus for a place in the final.

"This club and new stadium deserves big nights like tonight," he tweeted. "They belong here.

"In my time @SpursOfficial we managed to get to the QF, but I believe this team can go one step further!

"Go make us proud boys #COYS."

The Dutchman was part of the Spurs team that reached this stage of the competition back in 2010/11 as Real Madrid put Harry Redknapp's side to the sword with a 5-0 aggregate win.
