Rafael van der Vaart highlights Joao Felix's £113m transfer mistake after Tottenham admission

Atletico Madrid wonderkid Joao Felix is at the wrong club.

That's according to former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart.

The 20-year-old joined the La Liga giants from Benfica in the summer transfer window for £113m thus making him the most expensive teenager in world football.

However, he's not hit the heights expected of him just yet in the Spanish capital. Past the halfway stage in the La Liga season and the Portugal international has managed just two goals in 17 appearances.

But van der Vaart thinks Felix isn't being allowed to shine in Diego Simeone's system.

"Joao Felix is a fine player, but he's at the wrong club," van der Vaart told AS. "When they signed the Portuguese striker I felt that Simeone would try and embark on a different brand of playing, but that's far from the case.

"I understand that winning is important but when you have a talented forward like him, you need to cater the style of play somewhat to suit his needs.

"Atletico Madrid play in a very compact manner with a heavy focus on defending well and attacking on the counter.

"Felix, I feel is at the wrong club and working under the wrong coach."

Things could have been different for Felix as he was linked with several clubs before making the move to Atletico and admitted he'd could play for Spurs one day.

"Premier League," he told Bleacher Report, as per the Express when asked which of the other European leagues he’d like to play in.

"Me, to Spurs? [Right] now that's impossible, but I don't know, [maybe] one day."

Whether that "one day" is in the near future remains to be seen, but judging by previous comments it would be a shock if Felix leaves Atletico after one season.

"I don't really care about [my price tag] or the money, I just want to be playing and I just want to get my job done," he added. "That's the most important thing.

"It's a dream come true to be playing with Atletico, one of the best teams in Europe and the world. I'm very happy.

"I don't have any problems with pressure, it's my job. I have to know how to handle that."
