NEW DELHI: Three-time champion Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the 2024 Paribas Open, citing his readiness to compete at the highest level as the reason for his decision.
The ATP 1000 Masters event commenced its main draw matches on Thursday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Nadal, a former World No. 1, expressed his regret over his inability to participate in the prestigious tournament despite being on-site in the California desert and engaging in training sessions earlier in the week.
The 37-year-old Spaniard was scheduled to face former World No. 3 Milos Raonic but will now be replaced by lucky loser Sumit Nagal of India.
In a heartfelt statement, Nadal conveyed his disappointment at having to withdraw from an event he holds in high regard, emphasizing his love for playing at Indian Wells.
Despite his dedicated efforts in practice, Nadal acknowledged that he did not feel fully prepared to compete at the demanding level expected at such a significant tournament.
Nadal's decision comes after a period of rehabilitation from a hip flexor injury that sidelined him for 11 months. His return to the ATP tour earlier in the year saw him participate in the ATP 250 event in Brisbane, where he reached the quarterfinals before succumbing to a muscle tear near his left hip during a match against Jordan Thompson.
Although Nadal's withdrawal may come as a disappointment to fans and organizers alike, his focus remains on prioritizing his fitness and ensuring a full recovery before returning to competitive action.
