Rafael Nadal to make long-awaited ATP return next week in Barcelona

NEW DELHI: Rafael Nadal is set to make his eagerly awaited return to ATP competition at the Barcelona Open next week, marking his first official tournament appearance since January.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion's comeback follows a hiatus prompted by a hip injury flare-up during his quarter-final defeat in the Brisbane Open.

Nadal, who will turn 38 in June, aims for a smooth return to action as he gears up for a shot at securing a record-extending 15th French Open title, scheduled from May 20 to June 9. His participation adds excitement to the Barcelona Open, where he has enjoyed immense success in the past.

The tournament's anticipation is further heightened by the comeback of Nadal's compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, the world No.3, who missed the Monte Carlo Masters due to a right arm injury.

While Nadal receives a wild card invitation, Alcaraz, the two-time defending Barcelona champion, benefits from a first-round bye as a seeded player.

Nadal's draw presents a potentially challenging path, starting with a matchup against Flavio Cobolli, ranked 63rd, who is 16 years younger. A victory could set up a showdown with the formidable Australian Alex De Minaur in the second round.

The prospect of a semi-final clash with Alcaraz, on the court now bearing Nadal's name due to his 12 tournament victories, adds to the tournament's allure.

A video release showcasing Nadal's training session, where he appeared to move with ease and soundly defeated Russia's Andrey Rublev, further fuels anticipation for his return.

Having missed most of the 2023 season due to injury, Nadal is keen to maximize his clay court preparation time for the French Open, particularly considering the potential significance of this being his last year on tour.

With his sights set on further glory, Nadal's comeback is eagerly awaited by fans and tennis enthusiasts alike.
