Rafael Nadal to face Roger Federer in French Open semi-final after straight sets victory over Kei Nishikori

Defending champion Rafael Nadal continued his quest for a 12th French Open title by reaching the semi-finals after breezing past Kei Nishikori.

Nadal dropped just five games in a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 win against an admittedly tired opponent, who had been pushed to five sets in his previous two matches.

The 33-year-old was in supreme form from start to finish and secured double breaks in the first two sets which all but set him on the road to victory.

Seventh seed Nishikori could find nothing to hurt Nadal and the Spaniard will now look to maintain his record of never having lost at Roland Garros once he has reached the last four.

The only thing that held him up was a brief thunderstorm in the third set, with play delayed for over an hour, before play resumed in the early evening.

Nadal looked decidedly unhappy to be instructed to leave the court at 4-2 but wasted little time wrapping things up on the resumption.

He will now play Roger Federer in the semi-final on Friday after the Swiss beat compatriot Stan Wawrinka in four sets.
