Rafael Nadal forced to withdraw from ATP Finals in London through injury

Rafael Nadal will not compete at the ATP Finals in London next week after revealing his season has been cut short by injury.

The Spaniard had been expected to arrive in the capital despite suffering an abdominal strain that forced him to withdraw from the Paris Masters last week.

But Nadal has since reviewed that decision, announcing on Facebook that the same injury will prevent him from competing at the O2 Arena.

He will also take the opportunity to undergo ankle surgery in a bid to be fully fit for the 2019 season.

The Spaniard wrote: "Since the problem in the abdominal muscle also prevents me from playing in London, we take advantage of the moment to remove the free body [in the ankle] and avoid future problems.

"This way I hope to be in full condition for the next season."

Nadal joins Juan Martin del Porto in withdrawing from the competition due to injury.
