Rafael Nadal eases past Hyeon Chung to reach US Open fourth round

Rafael Nadal breezed past Hyeon Chung in straight sets to reach the fourth round of the US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The world number two was rarely troubled, staying unbeaten on his serve and keeping Chung at an arm's length for the majority of the match.

And the 33-year-old highlighted his dominance as he sealed a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 success in just under two hours on court.

The 18-time Grand Slam winner will face Marin Cilic or John Isner in the fourth round.

Nadal had extra time to prepare for the third round clash after Thanasi Kokkinakis, his second round opponent, withdrew due to injury.

Chung, on the other hand, had to come through a five-set match against Fernando Verdasco just two days before.

The freshness wasn't the biggest concern though; quality was. Nadal started off in dominant fashion, picking up a break in the fifth game, and never really looked back from there.

To Chung's credit, the 23-year-old maintained long rallies with Nadal and showed good range on his groundstrokes, but ultimately fell short in finishing off the points while Nadal wowed the crowd.

Nadal looked even more superior on his serve, going the entire match without being broken and often sealing his service game without dropping a point.

Once the Manacor-born star had snared another break in the second set, Chung's demeanor changed. The 2018 Australian Open semi-finalist knew that as much as he wanted to beat Nadal, it wasn't going to happen - not today.

Indeed, the Korean would pick up love holds to boost his confidence only to have it smacked down again. Nadal was serving consistently well, finding the corners and using minimal energy to do it.

The third set was entirely one-sided as Nadal produced a ruthless performance and once he got hold of the double break, there was no letting go.

With fresh legs and another three-setter beyond him, the one-sided nature of this match showed Nadal may yet again be the main rival to Novak Djokovic's crown at Flushing Meadows.
