Rafael Leao hints at Chelsea transfer regret after agreeing major AC Milan deal

Chelsea's hopes of signing AC Milan and Portugal forward Rafael Leao were shattered last week after he signed a new contract at the San Siro.

Leao had attracted plenty of interest from around Europe after being Milan's most consistent performer in the last two seasons. After helping end Juventus' dominance in Serie A by winning the Scudetto last campaign, the 23-year-old enjoyed another superb individual season with 23 league goal involvements this term.

Despite interest elsewhere, confirmation of Leao's extension in Milan was confirmed last Friday. The versatile forward has penned a new deal until June 2028, when Leao will be 28.

However, Leao has already shown signs of his disgruntlement at the running of Milan following the sacking of Paolo Maldini and Daniel Massara. Reports from Italy have claimed a meeting between the directors and club owner Gerry Cardinale was so 'negative' that the decision was made to part ways.

Sky Sport Italia claimed the decision was not a mutual one, but was indeed a club one. Both Maldini and Massara played key parts in helping I Rossoneri to their first league title in 11 years, but will now leave the club.

Reports have suggested the squad were shocked and furious at the turn of events. Sandro Tonali and Theo Hernandez are said to be stunned, whilst Leao took to social media to hint at his regret of committing his future.

Only days ago, the forward stood proudly with 2028 printed on the club's new shirt as part of the announcement of his new deal alongside Maldini and Massara.

On Twitter, Leao posted a thinking emoji at 11:26pm, shortly after confirmation of the decision. It's thought Maldini played a big part in convincing the winger to stay in Milan.
