Rafael gives verdict on Raphael Varane after Manchester United transfer

Rafael Da Silva believes Raphael Varane will have a big impact on the Manchester United squad this season after signing from Real Madrid.

The French centre-back signed for the Reds in a £42million move and was unveiled in front of the Old Trafford fans ahead of their win over Leeds on the opening day of the season.

After training with his new team-mates this week for the first time, Varane is in line for his debut against Southampton this Sunday and former four-time Premier League winner Rafael believes that the 28-year-old will have a big impact on the side, comparing him to Man United legends Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Rafael said; “I think Raphael Varane can make a big, big impact. I love the style of play and I love the way he’s dealt with his career and his mentality. I think he can make a big, big impact.

"Of course Sancho is a very good player as well but I say more about Varane because it’s a position I played with Rio Ferdinand and Vidic, so in the United era when they won everything, everything started from there.

"You need to have a solid centre-backs. You have Maguire and Lindelof, other good centre-backs, but I think Varane can make a really good impact."

United finished as runners-up in the Premier League and Europa League last season but Rafael believes this is the best the team has been since Sir Alex Ferguson left and that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought back the DNA of the club since arriving in December 2018.

“I think what United has been missing is what United is," he added.

"Ole brought this back, that’s why I was happy when he signed and I’m happy now because he knows the way United can play and how they should play and I think this brings the mentality and the culture of United back."
