Rafa Benitez warns what might happen at Newcastle United if 'another manager' takes over next season

Rafa Benitez has warned that Newcastle United will continue to battle for their Premier League lives if he walks away from St James' Park this summer.

Benitez made it clear that he wasn't prepared to spend a fourth season fighting for the right just to be in the top-flight.

In an intriguing Press conference, the former Real Madrid manager spoke about the ambition at the club.

He said: "I don't say now that we should be competing for 7th-10th only now; I said this three years ago.

"This club is massive.

"My memories of Newcastle when I was at Liverpool was a massive club that should be in the top 10 every season.

"Another manager may be happy with 15th."

Benitez also stated he wants to have a crack at the domestic cups next season.

He added: "When I was talking about a 'miracle', some people said I was wrong, but the players reacted.

"I want to compete and try to win trophies, but you cannot compete in the cups when you are at the bottom and have players injured.

"It is so simple to understand.

"If we do the right things we can compete."

When asked if there was a date in his mind he wanted his contract sorted by, he said: "Hopefully before June 30."
