Rafa Benitez 'wants' Anfield return as Liverpool forced into backroom changes

Here is your Liverpool morning digest on Thursday, February 25.

Klopp forced into backroom changes again

Gary O'Neil has left Liverpool's Academy set-up to join Championship side Bournemouth as their first-team coach.

It's a completely understandable move for O'Neil as he looks to further his career in management by joining the promotion-chasing Cherries.

The real intrigue came due to the former midfielder only being with the club for around six months.

O'Neil's switch to Kirkby in the first place was more evidence of the constant changes and alterations being made away from the pitch at Liverpool.

His move to Merseyside was prompted by Neil Critchley's departure as he joined Blackpool, a chain of events that saw Barry Lewtas take over the U23s and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson going to the U18s.

Jurgen Klopp revealed 12 months ago, following Critchley's exit, that changing the backroom staff at the club is crucial for its long-term cycle.

“We wanted to have the best people here in all different departments, that means in all the coaching roles as well," said Klopp.

“That means there are some requests – and will hopefully be more in the future – from other clubs.

"That’s exactly how it should be, we don’t want to have somebody here for like 20 years who is doing the same job. No, it’s exactly like that."

Benitez 'wants' Liverpool return

Rafa Benitez would love the chance to one day return to Liverpool, according to a Spanish football expert.

Benitez has been without a managerial job since leaving Chinese club Dalian Pro earlier in the year.

The Spaniard has recently been linked with the vacant Celtic job following Neil Lennon's resignation on Wednesday morning.

But, on his YouTube channel, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague revealed Benitez still has a desire to one day sit in the dugout at Anfield again.

However, he said it won't be happening anytime soon because of the presence of Klopp.

"There is a feeling of unfinished business with Rafa and Liverpool, I've always said that," Balague said.

"Rafa would love to be the Liverpool manager at some point. Maybe in a time of crisis, proper crisis, not what's happening now.

"Maybe in a time where there's a need for a strong personality to steady a ship. But right now in the way that the owners are behaving and Klopp and everything, that situation doesn't exist.

"How can we think that Klopp has reached the end of an era? Look at the bigger picture, how can anyone suggest that?

"It's laughable. It's stupid and absurd to be talking about a future without Klopp."
