Rafa Benitez tries to allay fears on his future at Newcastle United - as fans ask the same question on his contract

Rafa Benitez admits he is aware of the anxiety in the air on Tyneside when it comes to his contract extension - but has vowed to talk about his new deal soon.

The Newcastle United boss takes his team to Arsenal on Monday night but his team could move a step closer to safety before a ball is even kicked at the Emirates Stadium.

Benitez tried to allay fears about his future at Friday's Press conference but insists the time will come to discuss his new deal.

He told the Chronicle: "I always say the same, concentrate on the games.

"We have to do what we have to do.

"The job is still not done.

"We have to concentrate on games and then we will have time to talk about the future."

Benitez did not hold any extensive talks with Mike Ashley over the international break despite fans seeing it as the ideal time to complete a deal for the Toon boss - especially as Manchester United moved quickly to secure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this week.

Benitez spent time with his family but admits training has been competitive since he returned.

He said: "It is important to have a break sometimes.

"Normally we give them three days off and they can enjoy time with their family.

"The others can do nothing (who aren't on international duty).

"The risk for us in the international break and at this stage of the season the players are a little bit tired.

"Then they have to find another way to train.

"It is dangerous for us as we have little knocks but nothing serious."
