Rafa Benitez to Celtic latest as Napoli 'agree deal' with potential Neil Lennon successor

Hopes of Rafa Benitez taking over at Celtic appear to have suffered a blow as reports in Italy suggest he'll return to Napoli.

Parkhead boss Neil Lennon is under pressure after a disastrous title defence, with Rangers sitting 23 points clear and all but certain to stop 10 In A Row.

The manager's position was due to be reviewed in January but so far there has been no communication from the club about the results of the process.

CEO Peter Lawwell will depart at the end of the season and, while Lennon insists that won't affect his own future, many expect the Irishman to follow.

Celtic supporters are hoping for a bold appointment in the vein of Brendan Rodgers and Benitez has been touted after leaving a lucrative role in China.

The family of the former Newcastle and Liverpool boss still live in England and it was hoped Celtic could tempt him to Glasgow.

According to Tuesday's Gazzetta dello Sport though Napoli already have a verbal agreement for the Spaniard to return to the club in the summer.

Current coach Gennaro Gattuso's deal expires at the end of the season and the former Rangers midfielder has publicly criticised owner Aurelio De Laurentiis.

He's expected to remain in charge for the remainder of the campaign but Tuttosport also believes Benitez is set to come in.

The sports daily states that De Laurentiis wants to bring in Benitez as a technical director to oversee transfers, working above a younger coach like Spezia's Vincenzo Italiano.

And Corriere dello Sport also reports that Benitez is waiting in the wings and could even come in this season if Napoli do not beat Atalanta in the Coppa Italia semi-final on Wednesday night.

The Spaniard previously spent two seasons in Naples, winning Coppa in his first campaign.
