Rafa Benitez tipped for 'big club - Fulham' according to national journalist

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez 'would' head to Fulham and get them promoted from the Championship before turning them into an established Premier League side.

That's the view of Mirror journalist Darren Lewis.

Benitez's contract is up next month with the club hopeful of sorting a deal out within the next fortnight.

The Spaniard has made it clear that he would like to stay at Newcastle , telling Sky Sports after the win against Leicester that to do so was about 'doing the right things' and making sure the club can comfortably compete between seventh and 12th in the league.

Despite this, Benitez has been linked to several jobs including the Celtic role, but Lewis believes Fulham could be a tempting proposition due to their budget.

"The fans deserve him - (Mike) Ashley doesn't deserve him," Lewis told talkSPORT

"I think he can go to any club outside of the top six, possibly even a couple of clubs within the top six.

"[Everton?] I think if Silva doesn't start well, they could look at him. I know he's been at Liverpool, but I think they're a big club with money.

"[West Ham] They'll stick with Pellegrini, they'll give him big money. They like what he's doing there, they know they haven't got the players - and I think they'll invest more in their backroom staff because they've got to sort out all the injuries.

"But I think Benitez will go to a big club - I think he would go to a Fulham.

"Fulham have got more ambition than Newcastle. They've got big money, they didn't spend it very well last year but he would be able to spend it properly.

"He would get good players if he was to go there.

"I think he would get Fulham straight up and I think he would have them competing in the Premier League."
