Rafa Benitez tells his Newcastle United defence what he thinks in no uncertain terms after Liverpool defeat

Rafa Benitez admitted he could not make a case for his defence after the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Incredibly, both Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah were left unmarked for the Reds' first two goals and while United were unlucky to concede a harsh free-kick for Divock Origi's late strike, Benitez was disappointed to leak another goal from a set-piece.

After the game he said: "The third goal, it's not even a foul and the other two, we could do much better.

"You play against a very good team and you concede three goals from set-pieces, so you're disappointed.

"But at the same time, you know they didn't have clear chances and you were dong a good job.

"But when you concede and you react, and then you concede again and you react, it's fine, it's good, it's positive, but you cannot make these mistakes."

However, United managed to haul themselves back into the game through goals from Christian Atsu and Salomon Rondon.

So at 2-2, did Benitez feel he could win it?

He said: "I would say that at this point, we were pushing really hard, so at this point, we were more dangerous.

"We didn't have any problems in defence – even if they changed the system and put more on more offensive players, or they tried to change player to have fresh legs, I don;t think we had too many problems and we were more dangerous.

"Then we had this foul that wasn't and we conceded a goal - they have some good players, they can do these things – but at that point, we were close because Atsu had a chance and then after, we had more space.

"They needed to go higher and they were leaving more space for us, so I think we were really unlucky with this goal."
