Rafa Benitez takes aim at Mike Ashley and his Newcastle ambition with Everton owner praise

Rafa Benitez has praised the ambition of Everton owner Farhad Moshiri and has yet again highlighted the comparison between the billionaire, and Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley.

Everton are just one point off the top of the Premier League table having lost only once this season, and Benitez is already turning his attention to the January transfer window.

The summer saw Everton spend very little - only paying cash for Demari Gray - while Newcastle fan favourites Salomon Rondon and Andros Townsend arrived on frees.

The sale of James Rodriquez and the subsequent removal of his £200,000 a-week wages, means there is likely to be money to spend this winter at Goodison Park.

Benitez last week hinted at such a transfer pot being available - while at the same time pointing out that, an ambitious owner is not something he had at Newcastle.

"We have an owner that wants to spend money.

“After my last experience in the Premier League, not spending any money [ at Newcastle ], it is great to have owners with this spirit.

"Now it is important that when the new transfer window arrives, we are ready. We know what we need."

Benitez is clearly already planning ahead to January 1st and revealed the same requirements of any new players that he did when he spoke about potential new arrivals to St James' Park - that the club is not a stepping stone.

"We have to bring the balance between top-class players and the players that want to be here.

"They want to be here in the winter, when it is snowing and when it is cold, not just during the summer.

"Players who really have the passion and desire to fight for us. But they also need the quality to make a difference. It has to be players who will perform. Not just bringing in names.”
