Rafa Benitez set to make decisive call on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool transfer plans

Rafa Benitez is set to play a big role in the future of Liverpool transfer target Gabri Veiga.

The Merseysiders had identified the young Spaniard as a potential recruit as they attempt to stage a rebuild at Anfield this summer. A midfield rejuvenationhas already begun with the arrival of Argentine playmaker Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton earlier this month.

Veiga has caught the eye in LaLiga this term for Celta Vigo and was potentially seen as an ideal addition. He has a €40million (£34.2m) release clause written into his contract and is set to leave his current employers this summer.

Liverpool have taken note of his shining performances this season, but the same can also be said of a number of other clubs.

Premier League rivals Chelsea have been noted to have an interest in the 21-year-old, as have Italian champions Napoli. Now former Reds’ boss Benitez - who has also managed both of those clubs - is set to play a pivotal role in a potential deal.

The 63-year-old is closing in on becoming Celta Vigo’s new manager in what would signal his first return to the dugout since his much-maligned spell with Liverpool’s cross-city rivals Everton.

Whilst he might attempt to convince Veiga to remain with the club, Benitez could have some words in his ear should he decide to leave. Considering the great affection that Liverpool fans hold for the Spaniard, they will certainly be hopeful that he would be in favour of a switch to Anfield.

Interestingly, another of Benitez’s former clubs, Newcastle, are also noted to be keen on signing the young midfielder as they prepare for what is set to be a taxing Champions League campaign. Benitez enjoyed a successful three-and-a-half year spell at St James’ Park as he led the club to promotion from the Championship before managing to re-establish the Magpies in the top-flight.

Whichever club Veiga signs for, he will certainly be hopeful of translating his huge talent. The youngster enjoyed a hugely successful breakout campaign last term as he made 39 appearances in all competitions for Celta Vigo. He scored 11 times - two of which coming in a victory over Barcelona on the final day of the season - whilst also notching four assists. Veiga has three years left to run on his current contract.

Away from him, Nice’s Khephren Thuram remains as an option for Klopp as he attempts to bolster his midfield options ahead of next season.
