Rafa Benitez sends classy message to Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool after Reds' Champions League triumph

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez swiftly congratulated Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after the Reds lifted a sixth European title.

Liverpool defeated fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on Saturday evening in an all-English Champions League final.

Klopp picked up his first piece of silverware with the Reds, who were narrowly pipped to the Premier League title by Manchester City, and who lost last year's European showpiece final to Real Madrid.

Before Klopp, Benitez was the most recent Liverpool manager to lift the famous 'big-eared trophy'. In 2005, Benitez's Reds side produced the historic 'Miracle of Istanbul' as they fought back from 3-0 down at half-time to defeat AC Milan on penalties.

The 59-year-old was out in his home city of Madrid for the final, and conducted punditry work in the build-up to the game.

And, once the match concluded, Benitez tweeted: "Congratulations to @LFC and all the fans. Welcome to the club Jurgen. #UCLfinal #Liverpool #YNWA #Sixtimes."

Despite leaving Anfield in 2010, Newcastle manager Benitez retains a deep connection with Liverpool supporters; the Spaniard still lives on the Wirral in Merseyside, while his wife runs charities in the communities, and the 59-year-old has always championed the cause of the Hillsborough families.
