Rafael Benitez asserted Everton will remain 'ambitious' in the transfer market this summer but twice stressed the club remain wary of Financial Fair Play regulations.
Benitez held his first official Everton press conference with the media on Wednesday following his surprise appointment after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid in June.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager held training with his available first-team squad this week ahead of the pre-season trip to Florida in the United States of America.
Benitez told reporters he is keen to improve the squad he inherited at Goodison Park but admitted there is space to 'add players'.
The Spaniard said: "The reality is that when you go to any club the manager has an important opinion.
"You have to work in the context of when you have a director of football, the board, the financial restrictions. There are a lot of things you have to put together.
"But I am quite happy with the commitment of the lads. They are training really well. I think we can improve things. If we can add players and they are good for us, I think that is the objective.
"If we improve the players we have, we have good communication between everyone working here and managing the financial restrictions that you have to manage.
"But there is doing that, and still being ambitious."
Everton take on Millonarios and one of either Arsenal or Inter Milan as part of their campaign in the USA for the Florida Cup next week.
Benitez then takes his side to face Manchester United at Old Trafford a week before the start of the new season.
