Rafa Benitez says Academy changes won't make or break contract talks - but admits they were long overdue

Rafa Benitez has insisted that the changes at Newcastle United Academy will not determine his future as manager.

United will bring in three new roles behind the scenes at the Academy including a new Under-23 manager and a loan coordinator.

Benitez wanted certain changes at Newcastle and asked Mike Ashley to improve the youth system during talks last year.

When asked if this was an indication that he was prepared to stay, Benitez told the Chronicle: "No it means we have been talking about it for a while.

"In the end, we have done it and hopefully it will be for the good of the club.

"We will have an idea how to improve things and we have waited too long to do it.

"But now it is a good sign.

"My future is not linked with that but it is still something positive."

United's current Under-23 chief Ben Dawson is set to take a step up to a more technical-based role which could see him be the head of coaching at youth level.

Benitez revealed he has been discussing changes with Dawson since 2017.

He said: "I have been talking with Ben Dawson in the past and he told me the idea for this year.

"It is not that I am deciding.

"I am just informing.

"To be fair we have been talking about it with them for a couple of years now."
