Rafa Benitez's future no clearer as one BIG discussion is yet to take place

Rafa Benitez's future remains no clearer after the international break after Newcastle United opted against the chance to reopen contract extension talks.

Benitez's current deal expires in June and for now he has insisted he will focus on the job of guiding United to safety.

But fans believe that Newcastle missed an opportunity to tie Benitez down during a calm period in the last two weeks, with United on the brink of top-flight safety.

Benitez has since been linked with the Celtic job and a new report in the Daily Mirror today suggests that Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande could offer him a lucrative contract.

Those behind the scenes at United have some confidence that Benitez will stay on at Newcastle after this season, but with no in-depth discussions taking place nothing can be guaranteed.

Another decision that needs to be made is whether United sign Salomon Rondon from West Bromwich Albion with West Ham now joining Everton in the queue for his services.

There have been initial plans made for next season - such as the pre-season trip to China - and ideas on certain issues have been put to Benitez as Newcastle try to look ahead.

However, the big conversation that needs to take place is the one about the summer transfer budget.

In recent weeks there have been positive noises about the possibility of spending up to £40million on Joelinton of Hoffenheim but how the budget could be spread and the age of certain targets is still unresolved.

Benitez will meet the media today and is certain to be asked about what happens next as far as his next move is concerned.
