Rafa Benitez responds to fans campaign to get him to stay at Newcastle United

Rafa Benitez says that St James' Park is capable of producing the type of atmosphere that intimidates opponents.

With supporters gearing up for what could still be his last game in charge Benitez has acknowledged the public pleas for him to remain in charge.

In a week that resulted in the Chronicle's Rafa Must Stay campaign being backed by thousands of supporters and a host of pundits, Benitez said: "I am really pleased because they are supporting the team and supporting me.

"There was an emotional part of my decision the first time.

"Now we will see.

"We have had conversations about the potential and hopefully we can be closer.

"Hopefully all of these supporters will be happier.

"I will do my best in terms of the game and see what happens in the future."

Benitez has managed around Europe at some of the biggest grounds in football including Real Madrid's Bernabéu and Valencia's Mestallla not to mention places like the San Siro, the Nou Camp and Borussia Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park as an opposing boss.
