Rafa Benitez 'receives staggering offer to leave Newcastle' for China amid Chelsea links

Rafa Benitez is being lined up by Chinese club Dalian Yifang, who are willing to offer a staggering £12m-per-year to tempt him away from the Premier League.

The 59-year-old had yet another good season for Newcastle after he guided them clear of the relegation zone, with the Magpies finishing 13th.

But he has again publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the club is run, and with a proposed takeover of the club appearing to have stalled Newcastle are somewhat in limbo at the moment.

Benitez has also been somewhat surprisingly linked with a return to Chelsea after he had a spell as interim manager there in the 2012-2013 season.

But with Frank Lampard the hot favourite to take over from Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge this now looks unlikely.

With a CV that includes Valencia, Liverpool , Inter Milan and Real Madrid , Benitez is an attractive proposition for any club, let alone one such as Dalian Yifang.

They finished 11th in the Chinese Super League in 2018, and have signed European players such as Yannick Carrasco and Marek Hamsik.

If Benitez does leave he will be remembered fondly by fans of Newcastle.

Although he was unable to save them from relegation from the Premier League when he took over in March 2016, they made an immediate return the following year when they won the Championship and Benitez has kept them afloat in the Premier League ever since.

He has repeatedly aired his frustrations at owner Mike Ashley's unwillingness to spend money on new players, however, and said in May: “Maybe we were expecting to go one step further and further and we didn’t do it. That is the frustration sometimes.

“What’s changed in terms of the club - not too much! In terms of the atmosphere yes, it’s been positive and gives us hope that we could do better."
