Rafa Benitez next Celtic manager betting suspended as Neil Lennon replacement odds tumble after Spanish boss quits China

Popular bookie Betfair have suspended betting on Rafa Benitez becoming the next Celtic manager.

The Spaniard, who previously tasted Champions League glory with Liverpool, has left his role as Dalian Pro manager in China and its reported £12m per year contract.

That has members of the Parkhead support clamouring for him to arrive in Glasgow's east end.

Benitez was a popular name amongst fans to replace Brendan Rodgers permanently before Neil Lennon was offered the job after completing a treble Treble in May 2019's Scottish Cup Final win over Hearts.

But with the Irish boss under extreme pressure, punters reckon chief executive Peter Lawwell will make an audacious move for the former Real Madrid manager at some stage.

Betfair closed their market on Saturday evening, just hours after the news broke that Benitez had left China.

He was originally 10/1 to replace Lennon before being backed throughout the day to odds-on.

It's not the first time this has happened regarding the Celtic role - earlier this week Paddy Power suspended their market with former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe the leading candidate at 1/10.
