Rafa Benitez leaves Newcastle: Toon begin search for successor after manager walks away

Newcastle United have confirmed manager Rafa Benitez will leave the club this week.

The Spaniard, who arrived at St. James’ Park in 2016, has not signed an extension to his deal, which expires on Sunday.

The 59-year-old former Liverpool manager was unable to save the Magpies from relegation during his first season, appointed to replace Steve McClaren with two months of the campaign remaining, but they have since punched abover their weight following a return to the top flight at the first time of asking.

"It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30th June 2019," Newcastle said in a statement which caused their website to crash.

"We have worked hard to extend Rafa's contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been - and will not be - possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives."

Newcastle confirmed Benitez's coaching staff, Paco de Miguel Moreno, Antonio Gomez Perez and Mikel Antia, will also leave the club.

Garry Monk is the early favourite to succeed Rafa Benitez

"We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved," the Magpies added.

"We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty.

"The process to appoint a successor will now begin."

Newcastle are once again embroiled in a takeover saga as controversial owner Mike Ashley looks to sell the club.

Benitez led the club to a 13th-place finish in the Premier League last summer and is thought to be of interest to clubs in the Chinese Super League.

Garry Monk, who was sacked by Championship club Birmingham last week is the early favourite with bookmakers.
