Rafa Benitez has already told Everton what kind of 'project' he wants

Rafa Benitez has already told Everton fans the kind of "project" he is keen to take part in.

The ECHO understands that Benitez is the favourite to become Blues boss.

The Spaniard moved into pole position last night, overtaking ex-Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo, as first choice to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

Benitez has been out of work since he left Chinese side Dalian Professional in January and has been waiting for the right project to make his return to top flight football.

When asked about what he wants from his next club in March, Benitez said: “A competitive team that allows you to challenge for trophies, or a project that allows you to improve and grow and do better.

“The priority is England. Why? Because obviously I like the Premier League and my family is here.

“If it’s the right one, we can do it tomorrow.

"But the project, the competitive team, is not there at the moment so we have to wait."

Benitez is clearly searching for an ambitious side - and Everton could fit the bill.

Owner Farhad Moshiri has the wealth to fund the former Liverpool manager's ambitions which could see Benitez investing in a new squad if he takes over, particularly in young blood.

Speaking to Sky Italia in April, the 61-year-old said: "I like to compete, I like to win; however at the same time I can work with young people because I am a 'professor'."

Blues fans can further expect Benitez to spend on his arrival at Goodison after his comments during his tenure at Newcastle.

"You cannot find an offensive player who can make the difference for less than £20m now,” he said.

"We have good players and a good team which is strong if we stick together but we do not have these kinds of players.

"Players who can make a difference, can win games on their own, are more expensive."
