Rafa Benitez feels Brighton could be affected by late season nerves in crucial Saturday night showdown

Rafa Benitez admits that relegation jitters could affect Newcastle United's clash against Brighton this weekend.

The Seagulls could potentially be just one point ahead of Cardiff City by kick off time on Saturday evening if the Bluebirds beat Fulham at Craven Cottage.

That would keep Brighton right in the thick of the battle for survival, and Benitez - whose side are now safe - feels it could make for a nervous environment at the Amex Stadium.

Benitez told the Chronicle: "It is a massive game for them. That is obvious.

"But we will have to do things as we did before, we have to approach the game with confidence and without pressure.

"We have to go the way we want to and play the game.

"At the same time, there are lots of clubs around that have interest in what is going on so we have to be professional.

"It is a game we want to win.

"They will have more pressure as they need to win."

When asked if Brighton will suffer from stage fright should Cardiff notch three points, Benitez said: "You never know.  Sometimes they will start on the front-foot, score a goal and have more confidence.

"Other times they will make mistakes and you will score a goal and they will feel even more pressure.

"You always say to your players: 'Come on be sure to be sure to get on the front-foot and get the fans behind you'.

"But after that it depends what happens on the pitch."

Newcastle had just two points on the board after Brighton's narrow win at St James' Park earlier in the season.

But since then they have chalked up 39 points to steer clear of the drop.

Benitez said: "We have always tried to be consistent.

"In that game we finished the game and we were 11 points behind them, now you see our position.

"It means we have been able to do what we want to do.

"You want to manage the season in a certain way and for us we wanted to do what we did last year.

"We wanted to be competitive in every game and be close.

"People are happy if you play well and win.

"But you have more chances to win if you play well.

"There are different ways to do that, some teams play counter attack, some teams just attack."

Benitez will be without skipper Jamaal Lascelles tonight after the skipper pulled out of the game with a stomach complaint.
