Rafa Benitez explains what Lucas Digne must do to earn Everton recall

Rafa Benitez has offered an update on Lucas Digne's situation after the Everton defender was dropped against Arsenal on Monday.

The France international was not in the squad when the Gunners made the visit to Goodison Park, with the Blues coming out 2-1 victors.

Ahead of the game, the manager revealed his defender was not injured - with the player himself later playing down suggestions of a feud.

However, Benitez hinted he had not made a decision yet over whether the 28-year-old would be back in the line-up for this weekend's upcoming clash with Crystal Palace.

He told his pre-match press conference: "I think Lucas was clear, it's the manager's decision.

"He has been training today and we will decide tomorrow, it's a normal situation with a player that is training.

"We will see tomorrow if he's available or not.

"We need all the players around, because that increases the competition in the team. But at the same time, everybody has to be focused and has to realise the priority is the team. That's it.

"I don't want to talk too much about individuals, it's not fair for the group.

"What he has to do is just be sure he continues working hard. The team is ahead of any individuals, that's it."

Ben Godfrey was the man tasked with playing left-back in the absence of Digne.

And Benitez believes that the natural centre-back played well after coming up against Bukayo Saka.

"Very good. He was one of the key points for us in terms of getting the three points," he added.

"Everybody knows how dangerous Saka is, he was controlling him quite well."
