Rafa Benitez explains director of football stance after Marcel Brands Everton exit

Rafa Benitez has given his say on the director of football model and the changes that are currently taking place at Everton.

At the end of last week, it was confirmed that Marcel Brands had left the Blues after three-and-a-half years, after joining the club as its director of football in May 2018.

As scrutiny around Everton's board and the leadership of the club heightens, the Dutchman exited a day before their latest match against Arsenal.

That has sparked a 'strategic review' of the way the Blues are run, which will inform the best model to proceed with in the future.

And Benitez has revealed that he doesn't have a problem with any type of potential future structure, as long as it is right for the club.

The Everton boss said: "I have been in football so many years.

"Normally in Spain and Italy you have a director of football, so I don't have any issue with a director of football, or manager, or head coach or whatever.

"It's just to make sure we choose the right one for Everton Football Club, and then hopefully we can be successful with that."

Benitez is now expected to be the man in charge of the Blues' transfer business for the near future at least.

Before the January transfer window, however, he is firstly concentrating on the matches ahead for his side, which start with a trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"We know more or less what we want [in January], the point is getting what you want," he added.

"The transfer window is always difficult, but January is even more. We're trying to concentrate on the games that we have now ahead, while at the same time keeping an eye on the transfer window.

"My main job is to concentrate on the games, that is very clear.

"But at the same time, the club is trying to manage the new structure. They are working on that, my job is just to focus on the games.

"Obviously you keep an eye on that, but my priority is just the games.

"We have conversations all the time, it's one thing we're doing regularly. We're talking about ideas and after the owner and the board will decide which way they want to go.

"At the moment for me it's giving my feedback if I have to do it, and concentrating on the games."
