Rafa Benitez contract talks: Newcastle United manager unlikely to alter stance on transfers

Rafa Benitez has suggested he will not change his stance on how Newcastle United can progress beyond this season.

The Newcastle United manager did have a brief conversation with Mike Ashley after the 4-0 win at Craven Cottage, but knows that the real talks will begin this week.

However, Benitez - who wants more leeway on the club's transfer policy - will not budge on his view that more experienced players may be needed to take the the club forward.

The Toon boss said: "Because we have been talking about this for a while my answer is always the same.

"We have a meeting coming soon, hopefully and then we will see where we are. "

When asked what Ashley had said in the dressing room, Benitez said: "He said congratulations to everyone.

"We were in the dressing room, so he was talking to me and the team, saying thank you very much but nothing special."

Benitez was asked pinpoint the date he would meet Ashley, he replied: "I don’t know exactly.

"Hopefully this week but as soon as possible."
