Rafa Benitez confirms new transfer as Everton sign former Liverpool keeper

Rafa Benitez has confirmed his fourth signing of the summer with Andy Lonergan making the move to Goodison Park.

The Everton manager revealed the surprise transfer during his press conference to preview the Blues' trip to face Leeds United on Saturday afternoon at Elland Road.

Lonergan has been a well-travelled goalkeeper throughout his career and was last in the Premier League in the second half of the 2020/21 term after signing a short-term deal with West Bromwich Albion.

Before that, the shot-stopper had spent the 2019/20 campaign with Liverpool, where he didn't make an appearance, before moving on to Stoke City for a brief spell.

Alongside the new signing, the boss revealed that young goalkeeper Harry Tyrer had picked up an injury after spending the majority of pre-season as the senior side's third choice while Jordan Pickford was not involved in training.

It has not yet been confirmed for how long the under-23s shot-stopper will be out for.

Speaking about the Lonergan deal, Benitez said: "He's a player that can give us some experience as we needed to sort out this problem, just in case.

"We have a new signing, but maybe it's a player nobody was expecting."
