Rafa Benitez admits he's waiting on Newcastle answers amid Celtic speculation

Rafa Benitez says he is still waiting for answers concerning new contract talks as he prepares his Newcastle side for Friday's Premier League trip to Leicester.

It comes after former Celtic assistant Johan Mjallby suggested that Benitez could be tempted by a move to Parkhead with the 58-year-old also linked with Lyon and Marseille.

The Spaniard's situation remains uncertain at St James' Park with his current deal set to expire in the summer. The former Liverpool boss is one of the betting favourites to become the next manager of the Premiership champions.

And Benitez has stressed there have been no developments since he called for clarity from club owner Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley prior to last week's home defeat to Crystal Palace.

Johan Mjallby reckons Rafa Benitez would be interested in a move to the Hoops (SNS Group)

Benitez said: "It is exactly the same situation that I had before, so I am waiting and the main thing if I am asked about this is just to talk about the game, and I just try to get three points."

Celtic legend Mjallby reckons the lure of silverware could be enough to tempt Benitez north of the border.

He said: "Why not? You can’t talk Celtic down.

"Obviously, Rangers have had difficult years but they are massive clubs and either one of them should win the league every year.

"But even if you have been the manager of big clubs in other major leagues, the pressure you have as a Celtic manager is enormous.

"But you have the chance to win trophies every year at Parkhead."
