RAF Valley contractor starts consultation on job cuts at the Anglesey base

An RAF Valley contractor has started a consultation on new proposed job cuts at the Anglesey base.

Business Live reported in the summer that roles were under threat as the Hawk TMk1 is set to retire in spring 2022.

Now a new round of cuts could take place as part of the Hawk TMk2 - which replaced the Hawk T1 - programme, with around 20 jobs under threat at contractor Babcock.

There was some positive news last week on the Texan training programme, with an increase in planes and jobs planned.

Daryl Williams, regional officer said: “Unite are in currently in consultation with Babcock over a resource profile at Valley in anticipation of the new 11 year Hawk contract with the MoD.

“Based on the initial proposal this could see a restructure with 28 jobs being cut and 9 new jobs being created by April 2022. The impact of the MoD 11 year Hawk contract on the long term number of jobs at Valley is yet to be disclosed.

“Talks are at an early stage and Unite have made our opposition to compulsorily redundancies clear. The timing could not be worse and is another anxious period for the Babcock workforce, who have already seen two redundancy exercises in 2021.

“A voluntary redundancy exercise is currently underway and a number of current vacancies have been frozen.

“The resource profile is not definitive and the full picture is not yet finalised.. We are meeting Babcock management again later this week for further consultation.”

A spokesman for Babcock International Group said: “In line with previous Ministry of Defence announcements on the Hawk programme, we have entered a period of consultation with staff regarding around 20 affected posts.

“We are working closely with those involved and our Trade Union representatives and every effort will be made to retain their skills and redeploy them on other Hawk roles, alternative contracts or within different parts of the Babcock International Group.”
