RAF Typhoon fighter jet declares emergency whilst flying over Scotland

An RAF Typhoon jet has declared an emergency whilst flying over Scotland.

The Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft declared the Squawk 7700 emergency when passing close to Loch Ness at an altitude of around 15,000 feet.

The news was shared on social media by Twitter account CivMilAir just after 2.30pm on Monday afternoon.

The details shared on the tweet about the aircraft's distress call (Twitter/@CivMilAir)

The 7700 distress code is used to indicate the equivalent of an 'SOS' or "Mayday' distress call and is usually used to alert air traffic control on the ground to a major issue onboard the aircraft or the presence of a serious emergency and the need for immediate assistance.

The CivMilAir social media post said: "Royal Air Force Typhoon on an emergency squawk #Squawk7700."

No further updates have yet been issued.
