RAF transport plane declares mid-air emergency near Edinburgh after suffering 'technical issues'

An RAF passenger plane flying over 17,000ft near Edinburgh declared a mid-air emergency after suffering technical issues.

A flight tracker indicates the Hercules military aircraft issued a squawking 7700 alert at around 6pm last night as it was flying towards the central belt.

The 7700 emergency code is used to make air traffic controls in the area aware of an emergency situation - however it is not always serious and depends on the type of emergency.

In this case, the RAF have confirmed that the plane suffered a technical fault while on a routine training exercise and was able to safely return to its Brize Norton base, in Oxfordshire.

A RAF spokesperson told Edinburgh Live: "A RAF Hercules C130 from RAF Brize Norton suffered a technical issue on a routine training sortie yesterday, the aircraft recovered safely to base and all the crew are fine."

According to reports, mid-air emergencies are more common than many realise. As reported by Edinburgh Live, in 2018 and 2019 there were a number of Air Accidents Investigations Branch reports published regarding incidents on Edinburgh flights.

This had included everything from thick smoke entering the cabin to planes coming too close to one another.
