RAF jets scrambled from Lossiemouth after Russian bombers veer close to UK airspace

RAF jets were scrambled from the north east of Scotland to monitor two Russian aircraft, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The two 1,500-mph fighter jets ensured the Russian aircraft "never entered UK".

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that RAF quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth scrambled to monitor two Blackjack bombers while they were in the UK area of interest.

"At no point did the Russian aircraft enter UK territorial airspace."

The incident took place as Nato forces are in Scotland for a training exercise named Exercise Joint Warrior.

It was the RAF Typhoon warplanes scrambled to intercept Russian bombers heading for UK after a similar incident on Friday.

Aircraft, warships and more than 10,000 personnel are involved in the UK-led military training.

It largely takes place in the sea and air around the Highlands and Islands.

Friday's incident saw a pair of the fighter jets roared away from Lossiemouth after the quick reaction alert was sounded.

They thundered towards the Blackjack long-range planes sent by the Kremlin and which were “approaching UK airspace”, the Ministry of Defence said.

The British Top Guns were refuelled in mid-air by an RAF Voyager tanker which took off from Brize Norton, the UK’s biggest military air station.

Speaking on Friday, the MoD said in a statement: “The RAF worked closely with NATO partners to monitor the Russian aircraft as they passed through a variety of international airspace before they were intercepted over the North Sea.

“Our fighters escorted them from the UK’s area of interest and ensured that they did not enter UK sovereign airspace.”

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “Our brave RAF pilots have shown again that we are ready to respond to any threat to the UK.

“Alongside our NATO allies, we must remain vigilant and aware of Russian military activity.”
