RAF jets scrambled after suspected Russian aircraft spotted near Shetland

RAF fighter jets were forced to respond to a unidentified aircraft which was seen heading towards UK airspace.

A spokesman for RAF Lossiemouth said that the aircraft was suspected to be Russian.

They added that at around 11am on Wednesday, two Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon jets were sent from the RAF base in Moray to Shetland.

They were not required to intercept the aircraft and has since departed.

He said: "RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons have been launched at RAF Lossiemouth after unidentified aircraft were tracking towards UK airspace.

"These unidentified aircraft remained outside our area of interest and no interception took place."

He also added that the service was unable to confirm the number or type of unidentified aircraft involved.
