RAF instructor dies after 'parachute fails to open' in training exercise

A Royal Air Force instructor has died after her 'parachute failed to open' during a training exercise, it has been reported.

The accident happened at RAF Weston-on-the-Green in Oxfordshire on Friday, the Mirror reports.

The servicewoman's name, age and rank have not yet been released.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said an investigation into the incident has now been launched.

"We can confirm that a Service Person has died at RAF Weston on the Green", the spokesperson said.

"Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues at this time.

"The incident is being investigated and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage."

RAF Weston on the Green is used by the RAF to train parachutists from the army, air force and Royal Navy, the Oxford Mail reports.

The airfield, which is also home to the Oxford Gliding Club, is only manned part time by the RAF.
