RAF explains why jets have been rumbling over Edinburgh this week

Locals have been left looking to the sky as RAF typhoons and other fighter jets were seen and heard over the city.

Jets were also seen taking off and landing at Edinburgh Airport, but were explained as a routine training to allow pilots to familiarise themselves with the airspace.

An RAF spokesperson told Edinburgh Live the touch-and-go approaches allow pilots to experience different challenges.

They said: "RAF aircraft make visits to airports such as Edinburgh as they offer different airspace and challenges for our crews during training and also ensure our pilots/crews are familiar with airfields they may be required to utilise as possible diversions".

But other aircraft spotted in the sky may have been linked to a separate training operation that has been underway this week, Exercise Crimson Warrior.

It involved aircraft from the RAF, as well as the Royal Navy, British Army, United States Marine Corps and United States Air Force.

Fast jets, multi-engine aircraft, helicopters and Unmanned Air Systems were operating from stations across the country.

Exercise Crimson Warrior was a development of the regular Cobra Warrior exercises with the addition of missions to support the work up of F-35B Lightnings and helicopters that will form the Carrier Strike Group Air Wing during next year’s operational deployment of HMS Queen Elizabeth.

Incorporating large scale tactical training, the exercise began on the 19 October and involved over 70 aircraft completing a range of missions.

The Exercise also marked the end of the long and demanding Qualified Weapons Instructor (QWI) Courses, which train selected personnel to be expert practitioners in their individual warfare speciality or aircraft.
