Yvette Cooper confirms drone strike on RAF base in Cyprus

  • RAF Akrotiri, a British military base in Cyprus, sustained “minor damage” from an unmanned drone strike overnight on Sunday, with no casualties reported.
  • Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed the incident and said that the UK is exploring "every possible option” to protect Britons, including a mass evacuation for the estimated 300,000 British citizens currently in Gulf countries.
  • The foreign secretary said “all of the precautionary measures are being taken around the base”.
  • The UK has granted permission for the US to use British bases for "defence" operations targeting Iranian missile sites, a decision confirmed by the foreign secretary.
  • The decision has faced criticism from political figures, including the Green Party leader and Reform UK leader, concerning the UK's involvement in the Middle East conflict.
