Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has said he turned down the opportunity to write the Fight Cub soundtrack because he was “too f***ed up in the head” at the time.
Yorke had just finished touring the band’s 1997 album OK Computer when he was asked to score the 1999 hit film.
“Got the email. Got the script,” he told The Guardian. “And I was just too f***ed up in the head to do it.”
Yorke added: “I’d just come off tour. I was mentally incapable of even tying my shoes.”
Fight Club actor Edward Norton revealed that Yorke was initially approached because he and his co-star Brad Pitt were “obsessed” with listening to The Bends and OK Computer in the makeup trailer.
“We had those albums on all the time,” he said. “Then we started leaning on [director] David [Fincher] a little. ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if Radiohead could do the score?’”
The film was eventually scored by The Dust Brothers.
Yorke did, however, provide the soundtrack for Norton’s new film, Motherless Brooklyn, which will be released in UK cinemas on 6 December 2019.
