Radio presenter learns wife is in labour live on air - and they chose perfect name

When the call comes that your wife is going into labour, it can take a few seconds to gather your thoughts.

One radio presenter's reaction went viral after the sweet moment was captured forever as he was live on air.

Sanny Rudravajhala accidentally delivered one of the most dramatic live reports of all time, after learning that his wife Katie had gone into labour.

The news came through as he was reporting on the chaos of Storm Eunice for BBC Radio Manchester on Friday, February 18th.

At this point, the baby was five days late - so the presenter was aware that things could change at any point.

Sanny told The Mirror: "Every day I'm going in, and I'm telling whoever I'm producing with, 'by the way, [the] baby is due, I've not heard any news. I'll let you know if I do know any news".

Before his shift on Friday, the expectant dad messaged his producer at 5am, to confirm that there was still no news on the baby.

Sanny said: "I went off to Birch Services to talk to truckers.

"I'm just talking with the lorry drivers getting ready to drive through the rain and they're telling me about the issues they're going to face.

"Halfway through, we're playing the clips I recorded earlier [and] I got a message saying, 'Yeah, hello. I've started my contractions'. And that was it"

Just a few days earlier, Sanny's colleagues had played a nerve-jangling prank on him, where Katie had rung him twenty minutes into a shift, only for her to tell him she was bored.

But this time around, the call was for real, as was the fierce storm that raged on across the country.

Sanny's stunned reaction to his wife's news was played out live on air, as his colleague Anna Jameson announced: "Sanny, it doesn't rain, it pours, quite literally because there's some breaking news in the Rudravajhala household!'

Revealing his news live on air to delighted listeners, Sanny joked, "I do have some essential travel to get going on down to Wythenshawe!"

Fellow radio presenter Zoe Ball later offered her congratulations to Sanny and Katie during her own show and reshared the sweet audio clip.

Sanny, who was miles away from home at the time of the call, said: "I've just spoken to all these lorry drivers telling me how bad the weather is going to be, and how dangerous it can be.

"I'm in the radio car, I've got to drive around the motorway in the radio car, getting buffeted by the wind.

"I have to get back to Media City and get the car back safely, then get back in the car and get off home and find my wife".

He added: "I tried my best to stay calm, but I think on the inside I was in a real state of panic, like, 'Oh my God, like, what's going to happen if I'm stuck on the motorway? What if a tree blows down?'

Sanny actually found himself considering the name Eunice (Sanny Rudravajhala)

Fortunately, Sanny got home safely and, after taking his three-year-old son over to his mum's house, he and Katie headed straight to the hospital.

Sanny said: "I was still in my reporter gear, I still had, like my five coats on and my hiking boots. Thankfully, everything worked out alright in the end. But I looked a bit of a strange sight".

His daughter was born at 12:53 pm on Friday afternoon, and naturally, the couple gave her a fitting moniker as they named her Robyn Storm Rudravajhala.

Sanny admits he did float the name Eunice and had even managed to talk himself into liking it at one point, but unsurprisingly Katie wasn't too keen.

The proud dad said: "You could hear the wind whipping around the air conditioning from outside.

"Obviously, I'd spent the day talking about the storm and covering all the storm news. It sounds a bit clichéd, but it definitely picked up by the time she was born. She was born at 12:53pm, so Eunice had arrived.

"The trees were going furiously, and Robyn Storm arrived".

The family's surname - Rudravajhala - also fits perfectly with the little girl's blustery arrival time.

"Rudra is an ancient Hindu storm God, and in Sanskrit, Rudravajhala means thunderbolts from the storm God, Rudra. So it's quite a fitting name, really, it's like Robyn Storm Storm," Sanny explained.

Once she's a bit older, the proud parents are looking forward to telling their daughter all about her eventful birth.

Sanny added: "You know when parents have embarrassing stories about their kids? This one's got one from pre-birth, hasn't she? 'Yeah, that's how we announced your arrival, on-air!'"
