Radio 1's Big Weekend: Everything you need to know about this year's virtual event

Radio 1’s Big Weekend is going virtual for the first time in its history this weekend.

The three-day extravaganza, which was set to take place in Dundee’s Camperdown Park, was forced to cancel its plans amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

It means the whole thing will now take place online — and it looks set to be quite the show, with five virtual stages and a massive line-up to keep fans dancing at home.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When is Radio 1’s Big Weekend?

Things will kick off at 7.30pm on Friday May 22, running until the evening of Sunday May 24.

How can I watch it online?

The whole thing will be broadcast on Radio 1, as well as BBC Sounds. To watch footage, tune into BBC iPlayer.

Who’s on this year’s line-up?

The virtual edition of the festival will be a mix of archive sets from previous Big Weekends and live-streamed performances direct from the artists’ homes.

The Headliner Stage is made up entirely of classic performances from years gone by. It’s set to include Billie Eilish in 2019, Ed Sheeran from 2018 and Jay-Z’s 2012 performance. Plenty of other big names feature, too — Katy Perry, One Direction, Calvin Harris, Coldplay, Little Mix and Stormzy, to name a few.

The Radio 1 Stage will feature entirely new, live performances from 19 artists, including Sam Smith, Annie-Marie, Haim, Aitch x AJ Tracey and more.

Over on the 1Xtra Stage, it will be a mix of new sets (Afro B, Mahalia, Koffee and more) and footage from previous festivals (Jorja Smith, Dizzee Rascal, Nas, Dave, Snoop Dogg and others).

The Radio 1 Dance Stage will feature some big names from clubland, such as Bicep, Disclosure and The Black Madonna, while the BBC Music Introducing Stage will host pre-recorded performances from 40 rising stars, from Casey Lowry to Jetta.

Check the official website for a full rundown of line-ups and set times.
